Domaine Bernard Baudry

by

Bernard Baudry

COUNTRY: France
REGION: Loire Valley
APPELLATION: AOC Chinon

Bernard Baudry, son of a winemakers’ family, started his professional life as a vine-tending consultant at the Tours laboratory in the Loire Valley, where he worked with Jacques Puisais. He began making his own wines in 1982. His son Matthieu studied oenology in the Mâcon area, then in Bordeaux. He spent a year working in Tasmania and California, before joining his father in 2000.

The domaine now has thirty-two hectares of vineyards spread across the Chinon appellation in Cravant les Coteaux and Chinon areas. The vineyards are located on several different varied terroirs of gravel in the plain, limestone clay on coteaux, and sandy limestone on the plateaux.

This diversity makes it possible to use piecemeal winemaking. The entire vineyard has been organically farmed since 2006. The grapes are harvested by hand. The fermentation is natural without any chemical or thermal correctors (thermo vinification) to leave the grapes to express their true origins.

Wine Region:

Loire Valley

Also known as Garden of France and Cradle of the French due to the slew of vineyards, vegetable farms, and fruit orchards in the region, the Loire Valley is right in the middle of the Loire river. The area is known for many kinds of fruity, crisp wines: rose, red, white, and sparkling.

The region’s favorable climate – often a midpoint between the southern and northern French climes – it owes to the river, which is cool in springtime and possibly rainy during harvest season. Also, the temperatures of hot summers are similarly mitigated by the river and the breezes of the Atlantic Ocean.

There are a number of wine regions similarly situated along the river Loire, such as the Atlantic’s Muscadet region, as well as Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre southeast of Orléans.
