Marco De Grazia is a pioneering figure in Sicilian wine, best known as the founder of Tenuta delle Terre Nere on the slopes of Mount Etna. A former wine merchant turned producer, he has played a key role in elevating Etna to international recognition, mastering terroir driven wines that reflect the unique volcanic landscape. Working across high-altitude vineyards on Mount Etna, his parcels are planted on mineral-rich volcanic soils, with significant variations in exposure, altitude, and microclimate. This complex terroir allows for wines of remarkable precision, freshness, and structure, often compared to the great wines of Burgundy in their finesse and site expression. Specializing in indigenous varietals such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Carricante, Marco De Grazia crafts wines that are elegant, mineral driven, and deeply expressive of their origin. His vineyard philosophy emphasizes sustainable farming, old vines, and meticulous parcel selection to highlight the individuality of each contrada (cru). In the cellar, he follows a minimal intervention approach, using native yeast fermentations, gentle extraction, and restrained oak aging to preserve purity and terroir transparency. The resulting wines are refined, structured, and capable of long aging, offering a distinctive interpretation of Sicily’s volcanic identity.
