Discover Alicante

Alicante is a historic wine region on Spain’s southeastern Mediterranean coast, known for producing bold, sun driven wines alongside distinctive sweet and oxidative styles. With a winemaking heritage dating back centuries, the region is now experiencing a revival driven by quality focused producers and renewed attention to terroir. The vineyards are divided into two main zones: the coastal Marina Alta and the inland Vinalopó valley. Soils vary from limestone and clay to sandy and alluvial deposits, often at moderate to high altitudes. The warm, dry Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes and elevation allows for optimal ripening while maintaining balance and structure. Alicante is particularly known for Monastrell, which produces wines that are rich, structured, and expressive of the Mediterranean environment. The region is also famous for Fondillón, a rare, naturally sweet wine made from late harvest Monastrell, offering complex notes of dried fruit, spice, and oxidative character. White wines from Moscatel and other varieties add further diversity to the region’s portfolio. A new generation of winemakers is redefining Alicante through organic farming, old vine preservation, and minimal intervention techniques. This shift has led to wines that retain their traditional depth while gaining freshness, precision, and a clearer sense of place. At Origine, we feature Alicante as part of our premium Spanish selection, highlighting regions that combine heritage, diversity, and innovation.
